Kamishibai

Kamishibai, literally “paper theater,” is a traditional Japanese art dating back to Medieval times in which a narrator tells stories using picture boards slotted into a theatre-style frame.

The story is written on the reverse of  the picture boards, designed to be read by the narrator. The narrator uses a number of different voices and sound effects to make the performance more vivid, describes the feelings of characters and the atmosphere in the story, while enjoying sharing time together with its listeners. Kamishibai stories include traditional fairy tales such as Momotaro (Peach Boy) or Kasajizou.

Members of the JLA are visiting  schools in Luxembourg to promote the art of Kamishibai and share its fun with children, as part of cultural exchange between Japan and Luxembourg.Currently the JLA offers Kamishibai stories in English and Japanese. German, French and Luxembourgish versions will be available soon.
